Roasted Sweet Potatoes with Cinnamon (Ayurvedic Recipe)
Roasted sweet potatoes with cinnamon make a delicious breakfast, snack, or side dish. Naturally sweet, grounding, and nourishing, sweet potatoes are an excellent food for balancing Vata and Pitta constitutions and imbalances.
In Ayurveda, sweet potatoes are easy to digest, support healthy bowel movements, and act as a gentle spleen and liver tonic. They nourish the tissues and reproductive system, promote alkalinity, and are considered sattvic, supporting clarity and vitality.
For a complete and balanced meal, enjoy them with bitter greens and a source of protein.
Ingredients
-
2–4 sweet potatoes, washed and cut into wedges or thick slices
-
¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil or coconut oil (recommended for Pitta)
-
2 tsp ground cinnamon
(You may also use cumin or oregano depending on your constitution and imbalance) -
Pink Himalayan salt, to taste
-
Black pepper, to taste
Method
-
Preheat the oven to 190°C.
-
Prepare the sweet potatoes. You may leave the skin on or remove it according to preference. For a creamier texture, slice them in half lengthwise.
-
Place the sweet potatoes in an oven-resistant glass dish (preferred for Vata) or on baking paper on a roasting tray.
-
Drizzle with oil, add cinnamon, salt, and pepper, and toss well to coat evenly.
Vata types may add a small splash of water to retain moisture. -
Roast for 20–30 minutes, until tender and lightly crisp on top.
-
Allow to cool slightly and enjoy as a nourishing breakfast, snack, or side dish.
